Recessing a medicine cabinet

I would like to recess my bathroom medicine cabinet. When I opened up a small hole in the wall we found the stud has an additional board mounted to it, that I would need to remove to put in the cabinet. I can't tell if it is protecting an wiring, but it does end well before the light with no wires peaking out. Anybody have an ideas what that board may be? I don't want to open the wall too much more if I can't actually recess the cabinet. Thanks!

There are many reasons why framers add lumber to studs. They add it if the framing does not line up well with drywall, adding a jack stud, to screw with electricians and plumbers , to add backing for cabinets just to name a few.

Before you start cutting studs out you need to determine if the wall is load bearing. You will also need to look and see if there is any plumbing in the way of where you want to install the cabinet. If it is over a sink I will bet there will be a vent in the way.
