Replacing chains on old windows

I am refurbishing old wood windows which are 75 inches tall (full height of both sashes). The pulley for the chains are still in place but the chains are long gone. I have a source for replacements, but how do I estimate the length each chain needs to be? I was thinking 75 + 6 inches would be sufficient? You should not have any slack on the chain that holds the weights -- correct?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't measure the chains/cords. I brace the top sash all the way in the upper position then tie or attach the weight so it's about 1/4" -1/2" from touching at the bottom. If you are trying to estimate a needed length for ordering I not try to cut it too close as extra can be cut off but too short is too short.

It's hard to estimate.... I've always bought the chain in bulk and cut in place.

Found this formula on a website.

Estimating Length

For double-hung windows, the approximate total required amount of chain can be calculated by the following formula: (1/2 the sash opening height + 2 feet) x 4.
