Storm window measurements?
I need to replace storm windows on a garage. It seems as though the window slides into an opening and there is a flange that nails into the studs(?). Since I would have to take the siding off to get to the window (something else I have never done before), I was hoping to have the windows on hand, before starting. Does anyone know if I am supposed to measure the inside opening or the height and width including the flange, or something else altogether? I measured the inside but got 34W X 48H. Not finding storm windows that match those measurements anywhere.

It would be helpful to have a picture of the window:

What type of storm window do you want? Triple track with storms and screen? Double track? Fixed?

Yes, those look like vinyl triple tracks. Generally you would measure the inside dimensions. You can order them in any size you want, in vinyl or aluminum. The aluminum tend to be a lot sturdier.
I would pick a manufacturer and then follow their instructions for measuring to get the proper fit. You are going to have to remove quite a bit of siding to weatherproof them adequately.

Every storm window I have ever measured and ordered are outside-outside (tip to tip) measurements. That sort of measurement would be taken from the outside edge of the nail flange. You won't find any windows like this as a stock item, they will all be special order, so measure carefully and make sure the person ordering knows exactly what you want... if you take exact tip to tip measurements, be sure that is what they order! I have had a few guys want to deduct 1/4" or something, thinking that you don't know what you are doing and that they are doing you a favor. If the measurements are wrong, you will be the one to eat it. You did good to express your measurements in the order you did. 34w x 48h. Many people don't know that the windows width is ALWAYS the first number.
Taking the siding off is easy. You will need a Malco Sideswiper siding tool.

Thanks you both for your answers. I guess I will need to determine from the manufacturer. Do you have any recommendations for a manufacturer. I don't want garbage that I will have to keep replacing, but at the same time, it is a garage so I do not necessarily need amazing insulation properties either.
