How to install barn door for closet on non bearing wall?

Hi guys,

First off that's the very first time we are trying to install a barn door so we don't know much about the dos and don'ts. We are actually beginners in home improvements but can manage as long as we see videos

Anyways, it gives you a good idea at where we are at.

We bought this door Rustic Door | RONA it's quite heavy (44 to 66 pounds, we are not sure really) and we bought this sliding rail "Barn" Sliding Door Rail | RONA (This one sounds a bit heavy too, maybe 20 pounds)

We are looking to add it for our closet (in the master bedroom), it's a non bearing wall.

As you can see we made holes already and that was a huge fail... Nails won't stick to the wall.

Now that's some specs from the sliding door:

And the nails:

Is there a way of properly installing this barn door without making a complete mess? Like I said complete beginners here.

Thanks

As I see it you have 2 options. Remove drywall so you can install solid wood blocking, then repair drywall and then install your hardware.

Or just install a solid wood ledger on the wall, attach it to the studs... then install your hardware onto the ledger as specified.

Hey XSleeper,

I think option 2 sounds easier to perform for us What type of nails would you use for the wood ledger though? We agree that I only attach the ledger to the studs? Any specific amount of nails to use?

Thanks so much!

It would probably need to be a 1x4... construction adhesive to the drywall. Then a pair of trim screws into each stud. LOCATE studs with a stud finder, verify layout with a nail into each location before you cover it up with the ledger.

I have checked and found at least 3 studs about 5 inch above the 'door'.

When you say 1x4 construction adhesive, I am not following... Would you have picture? Sorry very new :/ When you say verify layout, I understand it's for making sure the studs are aligned? So my ledger would be straight?

You are attaching a 1x4 to the wall with construction adhesive and trim screws. You want to be sure you locate the stud locations so that the screws you use to attach the 1x4 to the wall will go into the studs.

Ok got it!

Now when the wood ledger is properly installed, I can drill holes for the sliding rail anywhere on the ledger? Are we sure the nails will be able to stick to the wall? Sorry I am asking because it obvisouly failed without the ledger lol! (There was no way to fix the screws to the wall)

Once the 1x4 ledger is installed as I described, you will be able to follow your directions and put your screws into the 1x4 exactly where the directions specify... which will hold your hardware up.

I would make the 1x4 be symetrical with the bar that is going to be mounted on it. So if the bar is 1.5 M long, make the 1x4 1.5M long.
