Can I replace single hung window parts?

Hey guys, one regular window started having issues where it would give stiff to slide the bottom window up and down until I heard something break, some clip on the side of the window then I couldn't move it.

I bought a new window but a guy who does construction saw the window and said since nothings wrong with the window itself, all I need to do is change the side parts which I can get at home depot and the window will work as new, is this accurate please? If yes, would this be something I could "easily" do myself?

It's hard to say since we can't see your window but if it's just the counter balance mechanism that broke all you need to do is repair or replace it. Older windows used a piece of rope, cable or chain with a pulley at the top and a counter weight. Newer windows can have a spring mechanism of which there are several types.

Ok please see pic of the side of this window, it's not the chain and pulley type, that was there years ago before we replaced with the new window.

Those are spiral balances and yes they are still available. You need the length and color of the plastic guide cap... which identifies the # rating.

You will also need the spiral balance winding tool.

I was thinking this would be a simple matter of replacing the parts showing on the side. I will try calling the manufacturer tomorow if the brand is on the window to get a list and description of the parts needed.

Aftermarket spiral balance parts are universal... not brand specific. Like I said, length and color of cap... any online window parts store has them cheap.

The red part.

Take this opportunity to spray the side tracks with silicone spray and wipe them clean with a dry rag.
