How low on a door can install cat door?

I need to cut a hole through my door to put in a cat door. The door has some paneling on it, so I was going to mount it under the paneling. There will be about 2 inches of space from the bottom of the cutout to the bottom of the door, is that ok?

If you leave 2" at the bottom, the door should maintain whatever little strength it has.

Your door is probably a hollow core. Along the bottom couple inches there will be wood and the upper part of your door will be in the core which is usually a cardboard honeycomb. So, don't be surprised if the cutting is easier for the upper part and more difficult at the bottom.

I'd try to leave the bottom frame in tact - about 1.25"-1.5" I'd set the bottom of the cat door on that wood.

If there has been any discussion of relocating any time in the foreseeable future, and/or unless you like cats so much that they will remain a part of your life(ves) for many years to come, this is one of the few instances when I suggest hanging a new door, just the slab, not a prehung. A little more work on the front end, but you could lean the original door against a wall in the garage, hang a couple of garbage bags over it to keep the dust off, and be able to restore it to original in 10 minutes. Unless it would really throw things off from the hall or whatever is on the other side, you may even get by with a flat one to put the cat door in.
