New windows

Need to replace windows, surprisingly, two of them still had the factory sticker on them.

Built 9/9/87
31 3/8 X 40 1/4

Installing a window is no problem, it is the exterior work that i'm clueless on. I know zero about flashing.

My question, will I be able to swap out these windows if I order the exact same size, without having to do any flash work?

We would have to be psychic to answer that. We don't know if your existing window is a replacement window in an old jamb, or if it has a nail fin. We don't know what kind of trim your window has around it on the outside, if it even has trim, or how much room is there for tape and flashing.

Best advice I could give at this point is that you should take off your interior trim, cut back drywall if needed, and find the size of the rough opening. That means the size of the opening once the window has been completely torn out and you are down to the 2x4s. A new window with a fin should be about 1" smaller than that. (The window size does not include the fin... that will add roughly 3" if you want to imagine the width of the fin as you look outside.) Then take that measurement, go outside, and figure out what size your opening in the siding is. Will you have to remove just the trim, or will you need to cut siding back? If so, how much?

Hard for us to say without being there, but that's the basic question you need to figure out.

Ah I figured as such, I didn't want to assume that I could just order these windows and slap them in. Ill pull off some trim this week and get some measurements of the rough.

You can have the best windows but if not installed or flashed correctly they will rot away in no time.

It's not hard but takes some work to seal, flash and trim a window. First one will take forever, second one will be done in a flash!
