Front entry door latch

I'm trying to replace the latch for our front door and discovered (AFTER taking the door apart) that the "barrel" of the new latch simply won't fit in the slot of the door mechanism (see pic). I thought this would all be standardized, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

So, my question is, am I missing something simple here, or is it best to buy this all together (meaning the door handle and latch)?

Latches are brand specific, not universal. If that's an old handle, the replacement latches might be obsolete, or at least hard to find.

Best to buy door handle and lock set as a matched pair.

I was afraid of that. Off to the bigbox store then. Thanks for the info!
