old exterior door hardware

My 30" front door, that is probably original to my 70 year old house, needs some help.
The deadbolt and the door handle are independent.

THe main problem is that the brass screws have pulled out of the wooden door, and the rest of the lock set is barely holding in.

I figure just getting bigger screws won't last very long.

What is the common way to fix this?

Toothpicks and wood glue. Or if you want to remove the hardware you can completely plug the holes and redrill pilot holes. You can use wood golf tees or go buy a 3/16" dowel rod. Drill out the hole, hammer in the dowel eith glue, cur it off flush with a utility knife.
