Question about exterior molding with vinyl windows

We are putting new vinyl windows in a house and have a few questions. There is an 1.5inch gap between the flange and the edge of the window...is the molding suppose to sit into the gap? The house has asbestos siding and we were going to use 1◊4s for the molding...combined measurement is 1.25in ...

so we are not sure if we were supposed to screw the flange into the 2x4 frame behind the plywood or if we have it right...but dobt under how to use the 1.5 inch gap and how much of the window is suppose to stick out into the exterior*

Generally windows have a nailing fin that is set 1" back from the front surface of the window, but some windows vary. This nailing flange always sits flush with the sheathing... the surface your WRB is on... not on the 2x4 framing... on the sheathing.

And its not clear what you mean by where the 1.5" gap is. Brickmould is 2" wide and 1" to 1 1/4" thick, depending on which side you measure... the inside edge or the outside edge. That means that normally when you trim a window with brickmould, the 1" side of the brickmould (that sits right over the nailing fin) will be exactly as thick as the window is, while the outside edge (the perimeter of your brickmould where it meets the siding) will protrude 1 1/4" out from the nail fin and sheathing.

Add a link to a picture if you need to. Or here are the instructions:

So we have everything else right...but we weren't going to use brickmould like you mention (actually have never used it) instead we were just going to use 1x4 to trim it out...1.5 gap is between the nailing flange to the exterior side of the window...they are plygem brand windows
