Do interior wood doors have to be stained or painted

I have brand new interior wood french doors between dining room and TV room. Sorry but I don't know what type of wood they are. The painter thinks they may be oak. The are very solid, very smooth, very pretty as they are in their natural color..

I think they look fine as they are, but my contractor/painter keeps asking me if I want to stain or paint them.

Is the some reason it is better to stain or paint them?

Any harm to just leave them as they are, au natural?

You can skip the stain and leave them natural color but you will want to apply some sort of clear finish on them... lacquer, polyurethane, etc. Without any finish your hand oils will eventually make dirty, shiny spots on the wood.

Also unsealed wood can absorb moisture. Stain if you wish but definitely apply a couple coats of poly [or whatever your choice is] along with one coat on the top and bottom edge of the door.

Paint is for less attractive woods or to compliment your other trim. If it looks good, just protect it.
