Painting double hung windows

Painting my double hung windows a new color. Should I paint the part of the sashes that is hidden by the jamb liner, by removing the sashes, or is there an easier way? I donít want to get paint on the jamb liner, and I donít want the old color to peek through at the jamb liner; I would like it look clean and smooth. (The sashes do not tilt out; these are Andersen narrowline windows.)

If these are vinyl/ultrex sashes or jamb liners you definitely do NOT want to paint any parts where the pieces slide on each other because they will stick. Use a wide putty knife as a paint shield and wipe it with a wet rag every time you move it.
