How high to hang curtains above patio door?

So I need to know how high we should hang our curtains above our patio door. The picture below shows the problem. On one hand we have 9' ceilings and only a standard slider so there is a large gap above the door. We also are adjacent to vaulted ceilings (18') that can throw things off a little bit. The way I see it, there are three options.
1 - Right at door height.
2 - level with the top of the windows on the right
3 - All the way to the ceiling
Right now we're leaning towards 2, but wanted to get some feedback from folks on what they thought.
Thanks!

Will you be hanging anything over the windows (either one)?
If not, I'd want them to be even with the windows. You don't want them at door height.

I hung mine just above the door at the height which made sense based on the length of the stock blinds. Yes, that would leave a gap between the top of the blinds and the ceiling in your case (as it did in mine).

Curtains? Or vertical blinds? Roman shades?

I would put them the normal distance above the door trim... around 3" above.... but the length of the curtain will determine where it gets mounted, unless they aren't made/purchased yet. A wide box valance might be good.

yeah we were going with curtains. We don't want to invest a ton of money so that made the most sense. The curtains have been purchased but we could return or hem as appropriate.
