Is it possible to soundproof a return vent?

Hello, I'm new and also know nothing about home improvement this would be my first attempt. We live in a townhouse and recently got a new roommate who lives in the room directly above us. The rooms have large return vents, one per room. The noise travels just like the person is in your room. We own we don't rent so it can be perminit.

Welcome to the forums. Without blocking one or the other, which is a bad idea, I have nothing to offer. Hang tight, though, and someone may have something to offer which could at least help a little.

They do make duct insulation. I applied to my GEO thermal inlet and return duct and it made an incredible improvement in transmitting the units noisy operation.

Of course I had to remove the duct to do this so not sure you have that ability if it's built into the house structure.

Do both of the registers have filters incorporated in them? The only other thing I can think of is installing some sort of baffle that wouldn't hinder air flow, but would disturb the noise that travels down the tube. What size return are we talking about?

Back draft dampers can work for noise as well. At least when the unit is off.
