Old tape falling off ductwork for furnace
I checked my furnace when I saw 1/2 of the old tape are off. Do I buy a new tape to install it over the furnace or is it ok?

I'd pull off the loose duct tape and replace it with foil tape.
here's an example - https://www.lowes.com/pd/3M-2-5-in-W...C-Tape/4009889

Remove any old falling off and loose tape. Replace with metal foil tape.
Easy to work with and and much better adhesive than standard duct tape.

Ironically, you should never use duct tape on ducts. History has shown it does not hold up, so as mark said, remove it all and either seal with duct mastic or foil tape. Each has its places where it is easier to use so some of both will make the job easier.

Looks to me like that tape is an attempt to seal the space next to the duct, not the duct itself. Pull the tape off and give us another picture, there may be a different solution that would be better.
