Resizing Air Registers

I have 7 rooms with the old style registers that look like this...

They are roughly 12in by 12in.

I want to replace those with the newer standard style registers for a few reasons.. look is one. Another is I'm going to be switching the rest of the registers in the house to smart-home automated versions and I'd really like these 7 rooms to be included.

So my question is, is there any reason why I wouldn't want to just pull these off, change the duct size right inside the wall (For all by 3 of these, I don't have access to the ductwork under the floor without ripping apart my finished basement ceiling), and put the new register right on the wall. I ask because I can't recall ever seeing those anywhere but on the floor in homes I've been in.

Anything I'm not thinking of?
