having trouble fitting into outside dryer vent
I'm replacing the dryer vent and I'm having trouble fitting the 90 degree elbow INSIDE the existing dryer vent that vents dryer exhaust outside of the house. It fits OVER the pipe as shown in the photo below, but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to fit inside to prevent lint buildup on ridges. Any tricks on how to get the 90 degree elbow to fit inside? Thanks

The pipe in the wall is wrong. Try replacing the dryer hood outside, it should come with a new straight pipe. Your elbow should fit inside that new straight pipe.

Starting from the dryer..... all the duct parts need to go inside the following part so that no dust gets caught at the seam.

I re-installed a new vent pipe with a straight pipe. Do I have to re-tape the new pipe with Tuck tape to the vapor barrier? I notice the old pipe had Tuck tape on it. If so I will have to cut out some drywall around the pipe so I can actually tape to the vapor barrier before I reconnect the dryer.
Also, now that the pipe is much shorter I imagine it will be hotter. Do I need to worry about the pipe heating up and causing a fire inside the wall?

Should be using foil tape not duct tape!
No not's not going to be an issue with it being shorter.
In your case I'd try sliding the elbow back off of that straight piece about 1/2" and using the tape.

update
So I ended up having to remove the old vent to the outside and replaced it with one that had a straight pipe. I sprayed some Great Stuff "Gaps & Cracks" insulating foam sealant around the small gap around the new vent pipe to seal it. Then I foil taped around the vent connections and tightened the hose clamps at both ends. Sealed around the new vent cover with OSI Quad.
