How to Re-attach Duct Cover

I have a ceiling duct grate that has come loose. It looks like one of the two screws on the right is stripped, while the two screws on the left aren't actually attached to anything (the screws in the picture are toggle bolts I tried to use to fix this; they aren't the originals).

Does anyone have any idea how to secure this back to the ceiling?

Thanks,
David

Welcome to the forums.

What purpose does that grate serve ?
If it's in the attic it's completely incorrect.
Not really correct in any location unless it's there as an access point.
If it's a register for the HVAC system..... there should be duct work there.

To answer your question directly..... there should be a small piece of wood around the hole to screw into. You can use any type of scrap wood....even plywood. Typically a strip of 1"x2" or 1"x3" would be screwed in place giving your register screws a place to fasten.

Maybe it was an exhaust fan. Is it in a bathroom?
