fridge too cold

We have a Magic Chef fridge that is close to 20 yrs old. It's been trouble free the entire time until a few days ago when we woke up to find a LOT of ice in the milk and even the carrots in the bottom drawer were frozen. Strangely enough the bottles of water that sit next to the milk have not froze. The thermostat goes from 1-7, it's been set on 3 for ever. I turned it down to 2 a couple of days ago but it's still too cold so now it's setting on 1.

Any ideas on what's going on?

Yep, plastic jugs although when I first tried to pour frozen milk I thought about what happened to you.

I just pulled off that grill at the bottom and while the back side is kind of nasty - it's not plugged up or anything.

It could be a thermostat going bad or the evaporator inside is frozen over. Strange things happen when the air can't properly circulate thru the coil.

I understand about the thermostat but can you further explain the evaporator?
