washer not spinning, changed belt

I have a fridgadaire top load washer about 15 years old. It stopped spinning and I could smell burning. I changed the drive belt, but it still is not working. It will start to spin but then stops and It still smells like something burning. any thoughts.

thanks

Welcome to the forums.

We need the model number to help you.
If it's a top loader..... lift the lid and it will be at the bottom just below the lid.

Couple of things could be wrong. With belt off and washer can you turn center pulley? Does the tub turn when you do this.? Could be a item of clothing stuck under tub and only way to get out is to pull tub. Before this happened were you getting any noises or wetter than normal clothes after wash?

If we turn the pulley by hand it will move, with the belt on if we manually turn the pulley the tub will turn. before the machine stopped spinning we had no indications at all that there was a problem. Just went to take clothes from washer and they were still wet. Put back on spin and that is when I heard the squealing and smelt the burning.

Does the idler pulley turn freely? Been several years since I worked on one of those So memory a little dim. Idler puts the tension on belt spring should be pretty tight,

Sounds like transmission or motor. Can you see if the center pulley moved with motor?

Leave front off cabinet, put a chalk mark on belt and center pulley. With a flashlight you should be able to see if the pulley is turning or stuck.

I marked both the belt and the pulley and neither is moving. When I first plugged the machine back in and put it on spin it started to move a bit and then stopped completely.
