Washing machine no fill problem.

When I turn the machine on on the wash cycle, I hear a hum but no water flows. However, on the rinse cycle it flows normally. Does this add up to anything to someone who knows appliances. Unit is a direct drive Whirlpool. Thanks for any assistance.
I have just discovered that I can fill it on rinse, then run the rest of the wash cycle. Nice to have a work around.

The rinse is cold water only. Try a wash cycle set to cold.
If that works.... you have a problem with the hot fill valve.
Always nice to have a model number for an appliance in question.

Common problem is somebody shut off the hot water to washer. Been on many service calls where this has happened.

more

I Today I opened up the dashboard and loosened and replaced the plugs. I doubt this did anything. I also blew through the pressure tube and found it clear.
But when I tried again I found that by turning on the hot (which I don't normally use) I could get water. I don't know if this was the original situation, but turning to the cold water setting, it goes off.
Maybe the cold water filter is in fact clogged but I would expect at least seepage. Tomorrow I will check that filter. I am happy because I have got my machine functioning 90%.
So, if the filter is not blacked, that points to the cold fill valve?

If this is a newer washer you have to have both hot and cold water. Cold is no longer just cold but temperature controlled. Detergents work better around 75 to 80 degrees .

Still no model number????

You are on the edge of starting to go in circles trying to diagnose this.
What is the current status?
Rinse works and fills the machine?
You then move the dial to a wash cycle and the unit runs OK and completes the wash cycle correctly.
When the machine is set to cold water it will not fill?
When the machine is set to hot water it does fill?
When in hot it fills with hot water?

If the unit is using cold water on the rinse then the cold water filter cannot be plugged.
Many newer units monitor and control the water temperature electronically which can do some weird things.
