Clothes dry too quickly

I am having an issue with my 2005 Maytag dryer, model sde3606ayq, serial 18053754gc. The problem is that the clothes dry completely long before the timer reaches the off setting. The owners manual states the control knob advances slowly when the clothes are wet and advances more quickly as the clothes begin to dry.

The timer advancement seems not to be working due to the clothes being fully dry so quickly. This wastes a lot of electricity. Is this strictly a timer problem (worn out?) or is there a sensor that signals the timer to advance or some other remedy? Is it a repair I can reasonably undertake myself?

Thanks

I suspect your dryer model is sde3606ayq. If so, it has a moisture sensor which is probably your problem and costs about $50. It may also be a dry timer device which is considerably more expensive: $150-200. The timer regulates the time so it could be the timer, as well.

Some confusion with this electric dryer.
In looking at the schematic and parts diagram for this dryer.... there is no moisture sensor shown.

Your dryer requires a RS3200007 tech sheet which will be somewhere inside the dryer.
Typically on the back or inside where the timer is located.
There is a moisture sensor shown in the service manual but that may be in the gas model only.
RS3200007 downloadable manual

I believe your dryer uses a sensor heater to anticipate auto heat.
