Cleaning a washing machine
Doing research on getting shirts white I came across several articles on cleaning a washing machine inside - something I've never done. It seems that cleaning is often done with (not surprisingly) vinegar and baking soda although other products are available. Does anyone clean their washing machine interior? If so, why isn't the washing machine automatically cleaned during use? Do you see a difference?

If you use hot water and bleach in your washes, the machine is clean enough for white clothes.

No matter what you use... there is always a greasy buildup in the machine.
It can be at the top of the tub, inside the main tube, under the agitator.
I recommend and use Affresh for clothes washers.

I use Affresh washer cleaner once a month running the "Clean" cycle. I find non bleach whiteners work better for whitening than bleach, however, when clothing ages and it's been washed so many times, nothing really brings back the whiteness they originally had. At least that's been my experience.

We have a Whirlpool low water washer. Cleaning is recommended by the manufacturer. If we don't clean it (Afresh) once a month or so the cloths smell musty.

Our Electrolux washer prompts when it wants to be cleaned. We use Tide machine cleaner or plain bleach.
