HID lighting upgrade

We're looking at upgrading an older 1000W HID(Metal Halide) lighting system to either an LED retrofit or a total LED lamp replacement. Most lighting systems I've observed are supported on either a threaded rod or wire cable with the power cord either wrapped or wire tied to the hanging mechanism. This existing lighting appears to be hung directly from the power cable.

As best I can describe the existing there is a metal hook attached to the ceiling truss and the power cord goes into some sort of jacket that incorporates a loop that then attaches to the hook. The power cable then proceeds down about 10' to the light fixture which swings freely on the cable. Is this method still acceptable or do we need to plan on an upgrade along with the fixture swap?

You need to use a "Kellum's Grip" on both ends of the flexible cable. Lots of variations. Here are some Google images.

Depending on your LOCAL codes you may need to add seismic restraints as well.

It's extremely rare to see a fixture like that hanging from it's power cord due to the weight.

You can hang the fixtures from a cable and run the power cord along with it.

Does the current power cord have a plug at the ceiling ?
How high from the floor is the fixture ?
How many fixtures are you talking about here..... they are expensive to replace or upgrade ?

PJ,

These fixtures are 25-30 feet from the floor and are up-lit models. They have remote ballast/capacitors mounted on nearby walls so the fixtures themselves consist primarily of a receptacle and reflector, not a ton of weight. They do have plug/receptacles at the ceiling. There are 64 of them, so yes, this is a very expensive upgrade.
