Splicing wires together mid-air

Contractor is installing new a/c compressor alongside the house. He ran flexible metal conduit (MC) from the main panel in the house, through an unfinished basement and into a crawl space. Just before going through the rim joist he transitioned from MC to single strand #10 THHN and ran the single strands in water tight flexible conduit out to a disconnect box mounted on the side of the house. Where he transitioned from MC to single stand in the crawl space it looks like he spliced the wires together and wrapped them in electrical tape. He did not use a junction box. Is this acceptable?

Nope, definitely not. All connections need to be in an approved junction box. Also, using electrical tape instead of wire nuts is pretty much a no-no.

The connections should be in a 4x4 metal box or similar. You should definitely have him redo it.

Sounds like a hack job to me. Should have a junction box, wirenuts and proper transition fittings and anti-short bushings on the MC.

Also - cables need to be secured/supported within 12" of box.

He did not use a junction box.
I hope "He" is an air conditioning contractor and not an electrical contractor. Did "He" get a permit for the new condensing unit? Did "He" get a permit for the new electrical work? I hope the whole job will be inspected.
