Convert single gang to double
I have 2 single gangs for switches that I want to convert into a double before attaching to a stud or drywall.
I think i once saw someone just unscrew the side of the gang and join them together.
Is there anything major difference in strength doing it this way vs buying a pre existing 2 gang?

I may be missing something but don't understand the question?????? Are you trying to take 2 switches and put a single double switch?

No, the metal junction boxes I have are singles.
I want to make a double from these 2 singles.
They are not in the wall yet.

Are these old work boxes ?if so just remove 2 sides and screw them together, otherwise buy a 2 gang box that will suit your application either old work or new work.

There are metal single gang boxes that can be combined into double gang or wider; I assume you have that type. Feel free to combine two into a double gang, but keep in mind the box volume must be sufficient for the number of devices and cables that will enter the box so you should do a box fill calculation for the combined box.
