Can I join these two types of cable?
I am wondering if I can safely join, by means of wire nuts, these two types of cable. This is exactly what it says on each:
Cable 1: (UL) AWG 12 CU 2 CDR WITH AWG GROUND TYPE UF - B 600V
Cable 2: 12/2 WITH GROUND TYPE NM 600V (UL)
The wires inside cable 2 look slightly thicker than those inside cable 1.

Where would they be joined? UF-B is common outside (and buried) while NM-B cannot be outside.

The NM is inside, where it will be joined to the UF which will run outside under the structure for four feet and then come back inside.
(I notice no "-B" designation on the NM btw, but I have no idea what the B stands for so perhaps it is NM-B anyway!)

Yes use yellow or red wire nuts. The -B is a higher temperature rating found in newer cables. Standard nonmetallic cables are rated to 60C whereas -B cables are rated to 90C. Mostly relevant only when connecting to newer light fixtures that require 90C cabling.
The UF cable should be sleeved in conduit down to the bottom of the 24" deep trench for protection, but can run directly buried at 24" depth for the distance of the horizontal trench.
