What would happen if I did the above without a permit? I thought to extend a circuit you don't need a permit. How much does a permit for something like that cost? Is it a long process?

Do they inspect before you do the work? What about if I did the work and then went and applied for a permit? I only want to add a light and switch to an existing circuit. Then maybe later add an outlet to my workbench.

Maybe just cheaper to hire an electrician to do it! LOL!

Rules regarding when a permit is needed and the cost vary between jurisdictions. Calling your local building officials will answer many of your questions.
