110 to 220 volt conversion for home appliances

Not for the first time, both the best electrical and electronic products and the best prices are in the US. I am planning to buy a 720W food processor and a 30W citrus juicer, each with a single motor and, I think, a single speed. My two questions to the forum are:

- Can I assume, as has been the case with other devices, that as long as motors are 50/60Hz, and not solely 60Hz, that they will perform well with 220 volts transformed to 110 volts?

- Or are there other factors to be taken into account?

Apologies if this query has been posed elsewhere. If so, I couldn't find it.

Welcome to the forums.

We have 120/240v AC power here.

If the appliances are just motors and they say 50/60hz then a transformer type reducer should work fine. There would be a small difference in speed between 50 and 60hz power.

Thank you, Pjmax, for the helpful reply. But the reference to 240V was unexpected. I thought the normal US household voltage was half that.

Can you please confirm motors with a SINGLE Hertz rating, only 60Hz in the juicer's case, are NOT transformable?

The "small difference in speed" is useful and shouldn't be a problem. Do you know if this would mean, for example, 500RPM vs 600RPM (or 1,000 vs 1,200)? I suspect this is what Cuisinart intended when writing: "The DFP-14BCNY can be used with a 220-volt transformer but its power will be lower."

And probably made in China by the same factories that make products for your country.

No... you can use 60hz motors on 50hz. Short duty use should not be a problem.

A 60Hz motor will run 20% slower on a 50Hz power supply

Thank you, Ray, for the comment. Your observation is quite correct although it's bearing on this case is unclear. 'German' BMWs are made in China (and the US) and the 'American' computer you use is almost certainly Chinese too. So you can imagine where the 'French' Cuisinart food processor mentioned comes from.

My thanks, Pjmax, for the two clarifications. They deal partly with the questions raised. Incidentally, I found a site that concurs with your point and which prompted me to write:

I have spent some time attempting to resolve the 110-220 volt appliance issue on the web...the most detailed and convincing advice so far is your father's. I hope I may ask you (or him) for some clarification. You/he wrote:

"...Running a 60Hz motor on 50Hz will have the following results:
1) It will turn 20% slower."

So, e.g, 600RPM becomes 500RPM when transformed; or 1,200 drops to 1,000? Does this refer to 60Hz motors only or to 50/60Hz devices also?

"2) Cooling will drop dramatically,.."

I.e. ~20%?

"...and current draw will increase causing even more heat."

Is there a simple explanation for the increased current demand and would this also be ~20% (so 500W would rise to 600)?

"3) The horsepower output will drop, possibly dramatically."

Can your father elaborate briefly on "possibly"?
