How do I clean an electrical socket?

One electrical socket I use often has some black dirt in and around the openings. I'm guessing it's dust that got fried over many years. After shutting off the power, of course, how do I clean the socket--inside the openings?

Assuming you mean a receptacle it makes more sense to just replace it (IMHO).

Clean it with a Q-tip and alcohol.

It's more than likely carbon from the arc that is caused by connecting a device that uses power as soon as it's plugged in.

It may be time to consider a replacement.

Replacement is a much better option. If it is that old the contacts inside might be getting loose and making poor contact which would lead to heat buildup and arcing.

Thanks, ray2047, PJmax, and pcboss. I'll think I'll just replace the receptacle.
