Question on conversion of garage light switch box to electrical outlet

I have a shortage of electrical outlets in my cellar and garage. I would like to convert the light switch shown to an electrical outlet. Is there any reason I cannot just install an outlet (GFI)? The romex feels like it has a braided insulation on the outer layer so I am assuming it is original. (If so that would be 1957). I don't need the light it controls since I have plenty of lights in the garage door opener.

Thanks

If it is a switch loop you won't have a neutral. If there is a black and white wire connected to the switch it is a switch loop.

Don't despair if it is a switch loop. You can rewire to get the needed neutral.
