Electrical permit?

I'm replacing outlets, putting splces in junction boxes, and adding two recessed lights in my basement. It didn't cross my mind to have a permit but I'm on my local municipality website and it says that any alteration at all requires one. It's about $100 for them to come and inspect.

Has anyone ever had to do this?

I have a number of rental properties so getting permits is a pretty normal and frequent occurrence. Repairs don't require a permit but adding or replacing does.

Permits are required all the time but rules vary as each municipality has its own approach. Almost all in PA have adopted the 2009 IRC (2008 NEC) which technically requires permits. A lot of the suburbs and rural areas don't want to deal with permits unless it is an addition/new construction. Larger cites want permits even if you are only replacing a light fixture. Some places require an electrician to pull the permit so homeowner can't do their own work.

Give your permit/inspection office a call and ask them what triggers a permit.
