Electric hum on something I don't recognize

Just purchased my first house and was going to fix some outlets that weren't grounded. Whilst working my way from the outlet back to the breaker panel I found the thing pictured attached to a junction box. When the power is on it makes an electric hum sound, which I know is traditionally a warning sign. Just not sure what the little box is, or if it is something that is allowed to make noise.

I have done home repair for years but am not a trained electrician. I do feel comfortable working on electrical work as most I understand. Just this one box has thrown me for a loop.

In case it isn't clear the text on the box reads "thermal protected"

Thanks

Welcome to the forums.

That is a transformer for your doorbell. It's not uncommon to hear a faint hum or buzz coming from them.
