wire with fabric

Pretty old wire in this building but it is copper.
Is it best to trim off as much fabric as possible on these inside the junction box for fire safety?

Slip heat shrink tubing over the wires. Buy white for the neutral and black for the hot.

Ray,

That is a fantastic idea. I never would've thought of that.

The fabric is supposed to be there. It is part of the insulation and the stuff around the wires is called wire loom. You have knob and tube wiring.

It's not knob and tube, the wire is sheathed throughout the crawl spaces and walls. But it's likely the first use of fabric as the sheath...It's an outer fabric sheath with the internal copper wires sheathed in individual insulation

Also a safety tip to keep the light fixture that mounts there as cool as possible. Overlamped or enclosed fixtures can really break down those old wires.
