Floor Box Install Question

I'm installing two floor outlet boxes in the wood floors of my great room. The great room sits above a crawl space. I don't have an issue cutting through the hardwood, and sub-floor, or doing the wiring. However, I'm wondering if the professionals have a trick so they don't drill down through the flooring and discover they have cut the hole right on top of a beam.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Any reference points like a floor vent that could be seen from below?
I've used a small drill bit and left it in the hole and climbed under the house looking for it.
If you spray paint the bit first with white paint it's easier to find.
Make sure to remove the bit from the chuck before letting go of the drill so it does not snap off.

Brilliant!!

While it would be impossible to use a wall for reference it would be easy to use an HVAC vent.

Thanks joecaption!!

Sometimes a stud finder helps.

drill the small hole then stick a coat hanger through as it is easier to find.
