Use of Christmas lights in an unfinished attic space

I have an unfinished attic that is accessed by a pull-down stair unit. There is only 1 light to illuminate the entire attic. In lieu of having to install additional romex cable, plastic boxes, new fixtures, etc., is it permissible to use 2 or 3 strands of a good-grade of Christmas tree lights to provide additional light to my attic on those infrequent, and short, periods when I have to go up there?

Yes. You'd want clear or white bulbs.

If you don't have a receptacle you could replace your existing lamp holder with one that has a receptacle.
