Is it ok to splice NM and NM-B cable together?

I have the NM 12-2 with ground coming from my breaker. I am installing LED recess lights in my kitchen so I will need to use some new NM-B 12-2 with ground cable for that. If I bring my 12-2 NM cable into a junction box and splice it to my new 12-2 NM-B cable that will be going to my lights is that safe? I know they are rated for different temperatures (60 C and 90 C). I have the kitchen walls down so redoing all the wire back to my splice box will simple enough. I just need to know if that NM to NM-B splice in the junction box will be safe.

Thanks for your time!

That is perfectly safe so long as you don't have a device requiring 90C wire (such as a light fixture) at the splice point.

And remember the basics: Junction boxes can not be covered as need to be accessible. Since specifying a metal junction box your ground splice needs to also include the box.

Thanks for the replies. The 3-5 recess lights at the end of the circuit state they need 90 C conductor. That doesn't require 90 C conductor all the way back to the breaker does it?

No. Just need it where the light fixture is installed.
