Outlet with USB
Attachment 99618Attachment 99619I just installed an outlet with USB as well. Everything seemed wired correctly and works. However, I tested it with a electric tester, and I get mixed readings. Is this normal?
As you can tell I am not an electrician. Any help would be appreciated.

Look at your tester. On the side is probably a chart that says what all three lights illuminated means. Tell us what three lit lights means on your tester.

Just got my tester out,it is a extech about 15 to 20 hears old. 2 yellows good, any red a problem of some sort. I wonder if the way the USB is wired causes the light. Does it work? I see the red light is only on one side that leads me to USB wiring. Never looked at one to see how they are wired.

What brand is the device?
You need to check voltages with a meter. Check hot to neutral, hot to ground and neutral to ground at both receptacles. Tell us what you get.

I've never seen a tester that could have all 3 lights illuminated. The basic wiring for these is one 'good' light between H-N, a 'good' light between H-G, and 'bad' light between G-N. There are some other components to make it work the way you'd expect, but that's basically the 3 tests that you're looking at.
I'm not sure if you have one, but I always go back to my 2-lead neon tester. They don't get any simpler, and can tell you easily what's working and what isn't.

All 3 light on is invalid condition for your tester.
Probably your tester is a defect?
Something may be shorted inside for that to happen.
Another possibility I can think of is you have neutral with some resistance, but this would be very rare.
