Is it common that romex is not stapled to the joists?

Hopefully a quick question. While I was adding a set of recess lights to my ceiling I noticed that there were about 6 Romex cables running along the ceiling that were lying on top of the strapping all the way across the living room. This included the washing machine and dryer cables. I have to imagine these were original to when the house was built (1987). I thought romex needed to be stapled to joists to pass inspection? The living room ceiling is about 20 ft in long. Just curious if this is common?

Not uncommon, though you're correct, by code it should be secured.

If it was installed after the ceiling was installed (retrofit), the cables can be pulled and not secured.

If it was installed during initial build, it should have been secured/stapled, but it's not surprising that it wasn't and wasn't caught by an inspection since it's not really going anywhere if you can't get into the attic.

Thanks, because of the amount of romex laying there, it had to be during the initial build of the house. I'm just surprised an inspector would pass the inspection.
Thanks for the response. I appreciate it.

Probably whoever did it out drywall up before the inspector came, if the inspector even came at all.
it's an easy pass when you can't see it.
If it was dishes after then it's ok for code!
Not a big issue either way imo. Just don't put a screw through it

Ya, it was just surprising to open a hole for the recess cans and see 6 wires laying across the ceiling.

Thanks for the responses
