Wiring two light switches to two lights using 14/3
Hi I am installing 6 recessed lights. 4 will be on one switch and 2 will be on another. The electrical box with the 2 switches (I am considering a dual switch in a single gang housing) will be at the opposite end of where the 2 lights are.
Rather than running a separate cable 14/2 the full length to the two lights, I am wondering if I can run one 14/3 to both fixtures; I can use the black on one switch going to the first 4, and the red to the last 2 (and then leave the black wire floating at the last two lights).

It would be easier to run a single two wire to the 4 lights and a single two wire to the 2 lights but you are going to be tight in a single gang box. So wire the first 4 lights with 14-3. Use red for example for the four. At the 4th light..... use a piece of 14-2 to connect the last two using black.
