DIY Vinyl Mounting Blocks?

I am having vinyl installed on my house, and I plan on installing a trellis over the garage, and so I need to install brackets that mount flush and square. The brackets are 3.5"W x 24"L. I can't find a mounting block large enough to mount these. Any ideas on how I could make my own, maybe using PVC or cedar? I think the blocks would need to be about 8"W x 30"L.

I would modify each bracket with a wedge shaped piece of cedar rather than running a complete board the length of the trellis. As long as the brackets themselves are plumb the world is good.

Use whatever you like as a mounting block, then j-channel around it. 5/4"x 6" PVC would be good.
