winter window coverings

I have the trapezoidal windows common on many homes, cedar homes etc....
I used to plywood them up for the winter and that worked but what I would like is a design for
a permanent hinged or louvre style covering that looks good on an irreguler shaped window
and is easy to open and close. Maybe a combination of sun shade and winter covering.
I have looked on the web for designs to build out of wood but havent seen anything yet that
looks good and is sturdy.
My windows are about 60 by 40 inches and 30 by 40 inches.
Any ideas you have seen that work good and look good???? My siding is wood but I can remove some to make room for installation if needed.thanks...

Do a search for Bahama shutters. There's DIY how-to's. I suppose they can be made to fit a trapezoid window.
You could always have indoor shutters or blinds made to fit your window, too.
Curious, how cold does it get in California anyway?

Not sure about security but first thought was a pair of bi-fold units. They would look like shutters when folded open and with the tops cut at that angle they would fit nice when closed. But if you are talking about keeping a bear out you would need something much stronger.
