Question Attaching Hurricane shutters over 2 inch Thick window trim???

I have two-inch to three-inch thick window trim ( I think made of stucco) surrounding all my windows and it's preventing me from attaching Hurricane shutters like plywood or polycarbonate flush against the wall. How can I attach those type of shutters around or on the trim so that they work effectively? If it can't be done can the stucco trim be sanded down to become flat or removed without too much wall damage? I am so confused. Please Help.
