Anyone know what this is?

Hi All,

I'm in the process of painting my house. There's a rotted wood box housing some sort of vent(?) sticking out of the side of my house near the attic vent. Iím trying to find out what it is and if itís OK to remove. Whatever it is, it does not connect to anything inside the attic. It seems to just stick into the wall; it does not go into the attic. It's about 6"x 6"x 8". My house was built in the 1930s. Thank you in advance!

It looks like it used to have a louvers on the front of it. So it must have been open at one time. Whats the box inside of it that looks like it has a hole in the front? The size of that hole would tell you something. 4" = dryer vent.

bird house - that is what I was thinking, especially since there is no other opening.
Is the siding visible in the back of the box?

The smaller box inside has small holes arranged in a circle, like a vent or a speaker. Our dryer is in the basement and has its own vent.

It doesn't connect to anything in the attic but that grill-like thing is in the attic ?
If it actually goes thru the wall.... then it was probably some type of ventilator.

Looks like it should be removed and closed up.

The grill-like thing is outside, inside the rotted box. It does not go through the wall into the attic. Like you said, I'm inclined to remove it and seal it up, but I figure it must have served a purpose.

Mystery solved

We took the box apart. Inside was a burglar alarm speaker!
