Replacing Header from outside. Can I just cut the sheathing around it?

Am I allowed to cut a 6" (6" x 7 feet) inch strip of sheathing to replace a window header? The Sheathing would be recut 6 inchs and would be fully supported behind by the new header with no gaps.

I was reading up on the building code, and I wasn't sure if the 24" requirement was for sheathing that bridges gaps between studs.

Thanks.

To what 24" requirement are you referring?

After rereading this, I may have misread it. The below is what I read.

TABLE R602.3(3)

REQUIREMENTS FOR WOOD STRUCTURAL PANEL WALL SHEATHING USED TO RESIST WIND PRESSURES

If I replace just the sheathing around the header, is that the standard procedure?

Edit : turns out the table doesn't paste with formatting.

Good morning Beat,
We really need more information to be sure the wall doesn't collapse during your replacement.
1. Are you installing a wider header?
2. Is this on the gable end of the house or under an eave with rafter tails above?
3. Will you be providing any support on the inside?
4. What type of siding?

I already added a 2nd header. The old setup had 1, 2x6 10 foot header. The header was on the inside, side. On the exterior side, it had like 3 2x4s. I replaced those 2x4's with one 2x6 to take to load off the bad header. My plan is to come back from the inside now and take out the slightly rotted header. I wasn't too concerned with this, as the rot was very shallow on the header ( < .5 inch). The wall above, was only 3- 5 feet, and its a gable end.

The siding is grooved cedar shingles.

Before I close everything up on the outside, I just want to make sure its done correctly. Do I need to cut more sheathing above the header to meet some minimum sheathing size or can I just close it back up with new sheathing that is approximately 6 inches tall that runs the length of the header.
