Brick moulding under steel cladding?

I have an old house that has cedar siding and what looks like steel cladding around the windows and doors….

I am adding a patio door going outside, do I even need the brick moulding or can I go straight to the steel?

Where did you see this steel? How heavy or thick is the steel? Was it across the top of the window? If so it might have been a steel lintel or header.

Its likely aluminum, not steel... and yes, you want wood under it. Its not strong enough to be hollow and it needs to be fastened to the wood.
