Fence Rail Repair

A neighbor kid hopped my rail fence and broke a 9 foot rail in half (it is triangular rather than a round rail) It was a clean break and I can fit the two pieces right back together but I am not a great woodworker. What would be a good way to save this rail and glue it back together with support of some kind?

Drilling holes in each end and inserting a long, large diameter dowel would be a good way but it would be hard to get the holes lined up properly on a jagged broken edge.

An easier way, but still strong, would be to use tightbond III waterproof glue to glue the break, and then add a long, galvanized or stainless mending strap to the bottom of the rail where it won't be highly visible.
