Replacing Fence

Replacing my redwood fence. The rails offered by the 2 local redwood outfits are categorized as

Redwood Rails
Premium Redwood Rails

What does premium mean? I know what the other grades are common, B, etc but I've never heard of Premium. Google wasn't any help.

Thanks

Here are the grades:

Premium is not listed. Must be a label added by the dealer. Are you dealing with a "big box" store?

No, 2 redwood lumber stores. I'll give them a call tomorrow and inquire. I'm guessing marksr is on the money. Not sure why anyone would be concerned about knots in fence rails, as long as they're tight. I could see if they are using it for something else, but they specifically list them under fence rails.

The rails support the fence structure. Knots create weak spots which will break easily.

Knots or no knots

Agreed ... knots do create weak areas in the rails...

Knot free rails,. and or pickets look more appealing to the folks who wish to show their fence as being a work of art....

Not to make fun of this ... But there are some some lines of fencing that cost thousands for materials where as elsewhere they would cost just hundreds...
I have seen some of these fences and I have to admit, in all the fences I have installed in life it is a pleasure to see a 6 inch wide picket completely free of knots... Stained clear with or without a color.

Mostly on mansions ... But they are out there none the less...

Make your choice based on your specific conditions... If clear is a dollar or two more than knotty... buy clear...

If clear is a hundred dollars more than knotty...... Hmmmm

Happy Holidays ...
