Board on board fence pickets, where to start?

Hello all,

Preparing to attach pickets for a board on board fence similar to pic with deck screws. Planning to start by covering corners and gate posts, working from gate post towards closest and most visible corner on one side and house on other side, then to less visible corners, ripping last picket, at house and less visible corners, if they don’t fit.

How does that sound...Make sense?

I appreciate your feedback!

You want to get out your scratch pad or calculator and see how much overlap is optimal so the spacing looks right. Have you give any consideration to the wind load a solid fence will be subjected to?

If I understand what you're asking, I would start with the width of the boards, less the overlap, and divide that into the total run. That will give you a rough number of boards in the run, but you'll have one less overlap than boards, so call the board width X or whatever you want, call the overlap Y or whatever, with the quantity of Y being 1 less than the quantity of X, and adjust Y, or the overlap, to fit the total run.

Normally a fence of that type will have spacing and the pickets will alternate from side to side. That gives privacy and also reduce wind resistance. This is called board on board.

Down here we call that shadow box fencing.

Thanks!

Yes, I’ve given consideration to wind load, but since this around pool, I want the added privacy of board on board as opposed to shadow box.

Pickets are 5-1/2” W and I’m planning on using 3-1/2” W spacer (basically a 2x4) with 1” overlap on each side, so it’ll look something like this, sans 2x4...

Thanks!

My bad, to clarify, I’m asking where to install first pickets? I’ve seen some videos recommend doing as I stated, cover corner posts and gate posts first, so they have full pickets.

FWIW: First run is 224-3/4”: house > cover gate latch post 44-1/4” > gate (46”) > cover gate hinge post to cover 1st corner 134-1/4”. Doing your math, if I divide 224-3/4” by 3-1/2” (board width minus overlap) it gives me 64.21 as rough number of boards.

That said, I’m a bit confused by “quantity of Y being 1 less than quantity of X, and adjust Y, or the overlap, to fit the total run”.
