So, how important is stain / sealer?

Our home has a 6' wood perimeter fence, which was installed maybe 20 years ago by the previous owners. It had turned gray & dirty in the subsequent years. I just pressure washed it, and it looks like new again. I doubt it had any treatment on it before, so how important is it that I stain or seal it now? Will it truly make a difference in the long run?
Thanks,
Andy

IMO the wood will last and look better longer if you stain it ..... but then I am a painter

Pressure treated pine, cedar, redwood and cyprus all fare ok without stain but I think they do better with stain. All uncoated wood exposed to the elements will turn grey. This process usually starts within a few months.

I'm surprised after 20 years you say the fence looks very good after power wash. I agree with Marksr put something on it.

I suspect the fence was aggressively pressure washed and removed the top layer of wood exposing fresh wood underneath.

I think Mark is right. I did really blast it. I will stain it, but not sure when, as I have a LOT of fence, and not a lot of free time.
Thanks Everyone!
